Mesa Contemporary Art Museum (MCAM) presents Yonder Peasant: the photography of Pedro E. Guerrero who is an iconic Arizona Photographer.
Patrons are greeted by an incredible color photograph of the artist, an intimate self-portrait of the artist located on the entrance wall, giving us a real sense of his style and energy. Guerrero’s photography is brilliant, showcasing fascinating artist portraits and idyllic mid-century modern Architectural gems. He is originally from Mesa and possessed such a mastery of the camera with a refreshing voice and is considered an icon of photography. According to MCAM Guerrero work is “ephemeral photographs are a rich source of Americana that capture an incredible time of innovation and change that is often revered with a sense of nostalgia. “ His unique perspectives of iconic architectural masterpieces are breathtaking while his gives us fascinating glimpse into the lives of iconic artists.
The exhibition highlights several Arizona architectural gems including a stunning image of Taliesin West titled “Taliesin Winter", which shows the grandeur and simple beauty of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. Guerrero and Wright had famed and noted friendship that impacted the course of his entire career, which can be seen in the exhibition with several wonderful images. Another prominent subject in his work is famed sculptor, Alexander Calder with fascinating pieces including “Sandy’s Desk” with a quaint glimpse into this fames artists life and work process in 1964 a beautiful Silver Gelatin Print. The intimacy that Guerreo was able to capture with famed artists was unprecedented works such as "I'm an Architect" a portrait of Frank Lloyd Wright that is both intimate and powerful.
Overall the patrons seemed to really be captured by Guerreo photographs, and you could sense the pride they felt since they knew this famed man was from Mesa, AZ. There is still time to experience Guerrero work for yourself since this amazing exhibition will be on view until January 17, 2106 in the SRP Gallery.
