Ask me what I want my kids to be when they grow up and I won’t hesitate with a reply. One word: happy. And to me, happiness is doing something that you love. Following your dreams. Being fearless. And going for it.

In all honesty, I hope my kids steer clear of anything crazy corporate. I don’t want them working insanely long hours, being caught in rush hour traffic, and having limited time off. Instead, I hope they have an entrepreneurial fire- a passion to take a chance and succeed at working for themselves. 

Kabbage, Inc. recently released data showing 85% of small business owners say being your own boss and owning a business is achieving the American Dream. A nearly identical 84% of more than 1,000 U.S. small business owners hope their children one day become small business owners.  

When asked why they wish their children become business owners, the top responses included:  

• Turning their passion into a career (38 percent)
• Being their own boss allows them to control their schedule (24 percent)
• Starting and building a company is rewarding (22 percent)
