AFM: Has attending Lexis Prep made a difference with your child and how?

SH: Lexis Prep has made a huge difference. Within two months. our child’s self-esteem increased dramatically. Following this, we began to see academic improvements. Our child has a desire to learn, truly believes he can learn and looks forward to school.

LT: Our son has developed self-esteem. He has discovered success in achieving his goals and making new friendships. He has taken a leadership role at Lexis Prep, even allow several new students to shadow him before they come to school at Lexis.

AFM: How are the curriculum, assessments and strategies used at Lexis Prep different from traditional schools?

SH: Several differences from our previous experience included faculty meetings with us and listening to us to understand our needs and goals and an in-depth review of testing and professional assessments that we provided, which helped develop academic modifications to better facilitate learning and identify any problems. In addition, smaller classes and positive reinforcement also helped.

LT: The curriculum encompasses all of the traditional academic subjects as well as physical education, art, technology and drama. Assessments are done three times each year through a unique alternative to standard skills assessments. This adaptive, un-timed, individualized method of testing is more accurate and can be applied in many unique ways.

AFM: What advice would you give to other parents of children who learn differently?

SH: You are the best advocate for your child. Educate yourself, objectively explore every option, don’t take “no” for an answer and don’t be afraid to push. It may sound clichéd but celebrate your child’s differences.

LT: I strongly believe that other parents who have experienced frustration with traditional academic settings should make time to tour Lexis Preparatory School, meet the staff and ask the questions that are important to their childs’ success.
