Are you a sun goddess?  Well, in order to maintain a healthy glow, check out what you need to know about summer skin care.

‘Tis the season of tanning.

Yep, there’s nothing like flaunting that gorgeous, glowing look--it’s something us sun gods and goddesses can’t get enough of.  But before you bake outside, you’ll want to soak in summer skin care 101.

Turns out you’ll want to take extra TLC in protecting your face and body during high temp days.  Caring for your skin should top your daily to-do list; and thanks to licensed esthetician Kelly Scott, we’re getting the inside scoop on how to do so.

“The most important thing is having a good home care regimen,” said Kelly Scott, licensed esthetician at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Aji Spa.

Scott spends her days doing facials at the Aji Spa in Chandler.  She says spring and summer months can really take a toll on your skin, so you’ll first want to secure a healthy daily routine.

“As we age, our cell turnover slows down tremendously, and that can really affect your skin,” said Scott.

Yes, aging is inevitable, but there’s a way to maintain that youthful glow.

Scott suggests introducing a 3-step process into your face-washing regimen, beginning with a good cleanser, followed by an exfoliater, and complete with a light moisturizer. And if you can work it into your budget, Scott swears by monthly facials.  They’re a professional way to maintain what you want to achieve, especially if you yearn to get rid of those nasty blackheads.  Scott says many people take extractions into their own hands, when they should really turn to a pro.

“Everyone’s skin is different, but we all need vitamin C and good sunscreen.”

It may be a buzz-kill for those who love the sun, but sunscreen is a must.  The sun may give us a glowing outcome, but with it, comes wrinkles, possible pigmentation, and health problems.  That’s why Scott says everyone needs to lather up, no matter your skin tone.  Rule of thumb: reapply every couple hours.

“The safest way to tan is by using tinted moisturizers.  Tanning beds are even worse for your skin than the sun.”

Along with sunscreen, keep a bottle of water by your side.  That’s because Scott says downing at least 64 ounces a day helps prevent chapped lips.  (To further cure your chapped lips, Scott suggests purchasing the Lip Enhancement Complex by Image, available at Aji Spa.)  Also, don’t discount your eyes; sunglasses block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays.  Sporting shades can prevent cataracts and wrinkles.

And what to do about those dry, dull feet?  Welcome sandal season with consistent pedicures, or give your feet a treat at home.  You can easily rub off dead skin by simply using a foot scrub in the shower.  (Try a foot treatment product with salicylic acid which will leave your skin super smooth.)

“Your whole body needs pampering.”

Consider yourself a princess when it comes to pampering your skin.  Invest time into exfoliating your entire body because you shed skin cells 24/7.  If you don’t get rid of them, your skin will become dry, so next time you’re at the store, grab a loofah and put it in action 2-3 times a week.

And it turns out some foods give your skin a fabulous glow.  Stock up on berries, and make them a part of your daily diet.  Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries provide major antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of age-related illness.  (They also keep your cholesterol down!)

“A USP-approved multi-vitamin can’t hurt.”

Scott’s top picks for summertime products include a weekly raspberry resurfacing peel and a hydrating wine mask, especially fit for dry skin.  Both are available at Aji Spa.
