Are you afraid of things that go ‘bump’ in the night? If not, the Jerome Grand Hotel is a great place for you. This hotel has been a hotspot for tourist and ghosts alike since 1997 when its doors first opened.

During the era of mining, more and more people found their way to Jerome, Arizona with hopes of striking it rich by mining copper, silver, and gold. In 1927, the United Verde Hospital began operating, and by 1930, it was known as “the most modern and well equipped hospital in Arizona and possibly the United States.” As the mining operations soon came end, the hospital closed its doors in 1950.

44 years later, the Altherr family, from the Phelps Dodge Mining Corps, purchased the old hospital and began to rehabilitate and restore it.

The building itself remains with very few changes to it. The preserved state of the old hospital isn’t the only thing that remains, though. The main attraction which brings many people to stay in the Jerome Grand Hotel is the ghostly activities that take place there. Smells of flowers, cigarettes and whiskey, and dust are often reported to linger in the air from unknown sources. There are several accounts of hearing labored breathing, coughing, and even mysterious noises and voices coming from not only unoccupied rooms, but even from the corners of guests’ rooms. Even unexplained activities like televisions and lights flickering on and off are known to take place.

Are you scared yet?

Well, the living isn’t the only one who occupies this former hospital. The Jerome Grand Hotel is said to have a strong presence of ghosts and apparitions. Often, some see a ghostly woman, possibly a nurse of the hospital, with a clipboard. This spirit has been monitored lurking the hallways as she leans and checks on past patients who once were treated at the United Verde Hospital. (Are you due for a check-up?....)

Not convinced? The Jerome Grand Hotel offers a ghost hunt for its visitors to seek for themselves. On this hunt, you can roam parts of the hotel and the boiler room with ghost-hunting tools provided by the hotel: an EMF meter, IR thermometer, a digital camera, and a tour guide. During your quest for apparitions, you may encounter paranormal anomalies and capture evidence, like orbs, on film. Ghost Hunting Tours are available on weekdays and weekends from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

If spooks and scares are less your style, the Jerome Grand Hotel is also a great place to stay and immerse yourself in the city’s history. You can ride the Verde Canyon Railroad and experience the city’s setting through open air, ride the back roads on an ATV and so much more. The AAA of America-rated Asylum Restaurant won’t frighten your taste buds, either.
