AZ Giving Spotlight: Chris Meyer of Colton’s Vision

Colton’s Vision is an organization based on helping children born with Microphthalmia, leaving the child nearly, if not completely blind. After a personal experience with the disease and his newborn son, Chris Meyer decided to help others in need of medical support for this disease. AZFoothills.com takes a closer insight at this brand new nonprofit.

AFM: Why did you decide to create this organization?

CM: We have a 2-year-old son Colton that was born with Microphtalmia. This
condition is also called small eyes where his eyes didn't develop all the
way. This lead to him being born blind though some babies born with this
have some sight. The Foundation For Blind Children here in town was a great
help for us but we found ourselves in a bind with the cost of surgeries that
Colton needed. My wife Simona and I decided to start Colton's Vision after
finding a private Facebook group of parents with children that have
Microphthalmia and Anophthalmia. For definition, Micro is small eyes and Ano
is absence of eye or eyes. We heard from families that do not have the funds
to get treatments needed for their children. We hope to help other families
with medical cost and their insurance deductibles with the funds raised
through our organization.

AFM: Do you have any personal experiences that caused you to create it?

CM: As stated above we found difficulties ourselves with absorbent medical cost.
Insurance was not covering quite a few things that Colton needed like a doc
band which is a helmet that helped his head grow correctly as some blind
children don't move their heads much which causes flat spots in their skull.
Another need we found that was not covered was an eye conformer, which helps
the eye socket form correctly so his face looks as normal as possible.

AFM: What is the most important aspect of your organization?

CM: To financially help other families and bring awareness to the special
needs of these special children.

AFM: What can the community do to help?

CM: Donations would be extremely helpful. As Colton's Vision grows we hope to
have many fundraisers to support our cause. We would appreciate thecommunity attending these.

AFM: What do you hope to see in this organization's future?

CM: Growth to sustain helping as many families as we can financially and also
having a division to help parents find counseling, specialty doctors and to
give them support and resources they need throughout our country.
