Mark your calendar for February 12th when the the latest film from No Festival Required, Uncommon Cinema Levitated Mass, comes to SMoCA Lounge. Plus don't miss the latest art exhibitions from SMoCA now on view featuring Afghan War Rugs and southwestNET: Postcommodity!

 

The film highlights the story of artist Michael Heizer, who has had an incredible career as a “Negative Space” sculptor and it was directed by Doug Pray. It explores the artist’s creative process and the museums 10 day journey with an astronomical $10-million price tag to bring his massive installation and brilliant sculpture Levitated Mass to life. Levitated Mass is a 340-ton diorite granite boulderaffixed above a 456-foot long concrete trench like structure that is located on the LACMA campus. Be sure to get your tickets now for this special screening on February 12, 2015 at 7:30PM. Also don’t miss the new exhibitions now on view at the SMoCA including Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia, a beautiful collection of contemporary rugs from modern day Afghanistan “collection of rugs updates traditional floral and geometric patterning with contemporary images of tanks, soldiers, world maps and more on view until April 19th. Also on view is southwestNET: Postcommodity an engaging exhibition presents two monumental installations: 'Promoting a More Just, Verdant and Harmonious Resolution (2011)' and 'Pollination (2015)' from Postcommodity. This transdisciplinary American Indian arts collective aims to questions common national narratives and the commodification of nature, history and culture, exhibition on view until April 26th.

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is located at 7374 East Second Street, Scottsdale 85251. General admission to the museum is $7 for adults, $5 for students, and children under 15 are free. Every Thursday the museum offers complementary admission as well as Friday and Saturday evenings after 5pm.
