Head over to The Gallery @ Appaloosa Library to check out their new exhibition “Desert Barnacles” by local artist William LeGoullon.

This exhibition was brought to the library courtesy of Scottsdale Public Art whose mission is “to serve as a leader in defining art in the public realm through creative place-making, signature cultural events, exhibitions, and installations — contributing to the community’s creative, cultural, and economic vitality.” LeGoullon presents a mesmerizing photographic exhibition that explores the unusual desert barnacle and the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea was a WWII military training facility in southeastern California where the US Navy submerged vessels from the ocean covered with these clinging creatures, built a base, and utilized the water, which had an unusual chemistry allowing the desert barnacle to flourish.

LeGoullon states “Now thriving in a body of water that exists only due to human mistake, barnacles found within a once dry ancient lake bed find themselves, like many who call the desert their home, to be transplants, migrants, foreigners”. When asked about the inspiration behind his work he says, “I have developed a personal obsession with the transformative quality of the desert”.

He goes on to say that “my belief that while we shape this land, nature continues to co-sculpt alongside us, drives his vision as a photographer”. LeGoullon received his Bachelors of Fine Art from Arizona State University.  In 2011 he was the recipient  of the Emerging Artist Grant from the Contemporary Forum of Phoenix Art Museum. LeGoullon exhibits his work regularly, both locally and nationally, continuing to work as a commercial photographer as well as teaching Photography at Phoenix College. This past August LeGoullon’s work “99 project” and a collaborative book “Embedded” were recently included in “The INFOCUS Juried Exhibition of Self-Published Photobooks” at The Phoenix Art Museum. He also participated in the October invitational group exhibition “Chaos Theory 15” held at Legend City Studios in downtown Phoenix.
