The classic “Cleopatra” was thrown curveballs here and there, enduring a lifetime of emotional and physical obstacles.  She lived through sicknesses like skin cancer; accidents, like falling from a horse; and several near-death occurrences. According to biographers, Hollywood’s leading lady has had 30 to 40 surgeries.

At 65 years old, Taylor reflected on her life’s whirlwind in an ABC “20-20” program.

“I’m like a living example of what people can go through and survive. I’m not like anyone. I’m me,” she said.

Those that knew Ms. Taylor considered her a vulgar angel—seductive, edgy, sensual, and vivacious.  Those that didn’t know famed female admired her exotic elegance.

On top of her star-studded, successful career, Taylor was a benevolent humanitarian—she took on a relentless fight against HIV/Aids, earning her an Oscar honoree award in 1993.

She was dealt yet another trying card earlier this year, when she was hospitalized with congestive heart failure.  Although she recently underwent many complications, she stayed strong hoping for a chance to return home.  However, this was the actress’s final fight.  Taylor’s publicist said the legendary lady died of heart failure with family by her side.

The gorgeous goddess is survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Intimate funeral plans are in the works.

In a statement, her son Michael released the following:

Though her loss is devastating to those we know, quite simply, the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.
