EXTRA EXTRA!
The young women of Xavier College Preparatory are attacking traditional gender roles early. On March 16, Xavier will host its fourth annual “Girls Have IT Day,” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Developed by the students with help from faculty, the event aims to increase young women’s interest and involvement in science, information technology (IT), engineering, art and math (STEAM).
Over 400 middle school girls from the Phoenix metro area will interact with more than 100 Xavier students, who will mentor and accompany the middle school students throughout the day’s events.
The program kicks off with a lecture by Mary Lucking, an artist, architect and technologist. After the wise words of Lucking, the students will participate in a hands on activity fair hosted by various Xavier student clubs.
According to surveys of women in college, females seem to have a significantly greater negative attitude towards computers and math than males. Big props to the ladies of Xavier for challenging the norm.
