Acclaimed artist Marilyn Szabo brings her highly anticipated project At Work in Arizona: The First 100 Years to the AZ Heritage Center this November.
Marilyn Szabo has been a creative force in Arizona for over 25 years, a staple and advocate for the Phoenix artcommunity. She has consistently produced new and highly original work in both photography and mixed media, where she blends the contemporary with her love of the historical. Her work explores a variety of diverse subjects including architecture, landscapes, and people while preferring to create in series. Szabo traditionally trained in the arts receiving her Bachelors of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and her work can be found in many public and private collections throughout the United States. She has exhibited her artwork both nationally and internationally, garnering numerous awards and grants, receiving a national literary magazine, awarded by Alligator Juniper in 2010 National Photography Award an the cover. Szabo and her artwork have been featured in numerous publications including Black and White, Focus, Phoenix New Times and Java Magazine.
Since 2003 Szabo has worked tirelessly on a large project titled At Work in Arizona: The First 100 Years, which was originally conceived as both a chronicle of our state's history and a challenge to investing in it's future. As an artist and curator Szabo is able to brillantly capture the spirit of ingenuity and entrepreneurship that makes Arizona amazing. Szabo said this project required extensive research, selection and or photographed images that are exhibited in Alliance Bank’s 10 locations in the state. She has shot 80 striking portraits and architectural images for this project, which culminated in a 168-page book published in 2014.
At Work in Arizona: The First 100 Years, provides a kaleidoscope view of a century of progress in transportation, water and power use, mining, manufacturing, aerospace, defense, agriculture, construction, real estate, cuisine, retail, sports, recreation, entertainment, travel, tourism, the arts and education. Currently her images are displayed a various Alliance bank branches throughout the state. This project has allowed her the opportunity to photograph, research, and work first hand with numerous individuals of our community through the support of Alliance Bank of Arizona sharing the very important history of our great state.
A selection of photography from At Work in Arizona: The First 100 Years project will be exhibited at the AZ Heritage Center at Papago Park that will open to the public on Tuesday, November 1st. Szabo says, "this exhibition will offer viewers an impressive history of our state’s economy, which is presented and generously sponsored by generously by Alliance Bank".
