Get lost in the dazzling colors of 11 Miles of Color: Repurposing Spring Crossing, which features new artworks created from recycled ribbons from last years Marshall Way Bridge installation.

The original artwork created by Randy Walker was for last years Canal Convergence: Spring Equinox, utilizing “11 miles of 35 different colors of UV resistant, solution dyed 13/16”acrylic braided ribbon”. Scottsdale Public Art and artist Randy Walker chose a group of artists to create artworks re-purposing the acrylic braid fibers from the previous installation Spring Crossing

Finding new life at the Gallery @ The Library, Scottsdale Civic Center, each artist was given about 1 mile worth of material and were allowed to create up to three pieces. Currently featuring the work of eleven Arizona artists working in a variety of disciplines. This eclectic group includes Jeffrey DaCosta, Amber Doe, Valerie Fair, Sarah Hurwitz, Francine Kavanaugh, Kris Manzaneres, Sharie Monsam, Courtney Richter, Shawn Rost, Katherine Leigh Simpson, and Kristin Wolfe.

Some highlights from the exhibition include sculpture by Katharine Leigh Simpson giant wave of color and texture literally projecting off the gallery wall, enticing viewers to come closer, whereas Sharie Monsam has taken a more traditional direction creating dazzling tapestries and a basket.

Sarah Hurwitz has created delightful works centering on the theme of mushrooms, while Kris Manzaneres has created a simple yet modern sculpture that is truly stunning.“The artists have transformed their one mile share of the repurposed ribbons through different techniques including weaving, welding and sculpture, and by incorporating a broad range of materials such as paint, beads, resin and clay; resulting artworks engage the public in a dialogue about art-making, perspective and recycling”, states Scottsdale Public Art.

Such an amazing job by these talented artists, creating some beautiful and fascinating artworks that truly engage the senses through the unique combinations of bright colors, excellent textures and unusual shapes. This was such a wonderful project with an excellent green message to share with the community all while supporting local artists and their artistic endeavors. Great job Scottsdale Public Art for giving artists the opportunity to showcase their artwork and engage us on so many levels! Scottsdale Public Art focuses on “bringing engaging artistic, visual, and educational experiences to the public—building community through free, accessible, quality exhibitions”.

Upcoming events related to exhibition include a the “Recycle to Mushroom Workshop” with artist Sarah Hurwitz on March 23rd from 3:30-5:30pm where you will make fantasy mushroom sculptures utilizing recycled materials. This workshop is free and open to all ages, but adult supervision needed for youth under 13. 11 Miles of Color: Repurposing Spring Crossing exhibition will be on view until April 30th, 2016 in the Gallery @ The Library is located at 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale.
