SMoCA has an exciting selection of art exhibitions and events lined up this March including Munro’s Ferryman’s Crossing and the spectacular exhibition Still Tickin' from Betye Saar.
A must see exhibition is the retrospective of seasoned artist, Betye Saar with Still Tickin’ who has had an incredible career. Her provocative mixed-media artworks utilize what appear to be ordinary objects, resulting in engaging and poignant works that examine ideas of African American heritage, culture and more. “Since the 1960s, her compelling, astute and expressive works reflect on African-American identity, spirituality and the interconnectedness between different cultures”. This captivating exhibition will be on display through May 1st.
Bruce Munro: Ferryman’s Crossing is a entrancing installation of compact discs that have been placed in rows are then lit with pulses of light which cause the cd’s to shimmer. “ An installation that evokes sunlight bouncing off the surface of flowing water that Munro uses light to animate environments in ways that activate myriad associations”, according to the SMoCA. This exhibition is apart of the Desert Radiance Series with additional installations by the artist at the Desert Botanical Garden, Lisa Sette Gallery and with Scottsdale Public Art. This unique exhibition will be on display through April 24, 2016.
SMoCA has several wonderful events this month in the SMoCA Lounge including: Bad Luck is an evening of stand-up hosted by Anthony Desamito and featuring Danielle Williams, Matt Micheletti, Heidi Geldis-Young, Peter Sers, and Patrick Keane. Taking place on March 18th and tickets are just $10 ($8 members) and can be purchased online. Out@SMoCA is a fabulous evening of cocktails, conversation and provocative art, welcoming the LGBTQ community and friends to come explore the Museum’s spring exhibitions! This event is free but you must RSVP by Mar 21st due to limited space: outatsmoca.rsvpify.com. SMoCA presents a lecture and book signing: “From Printed Page to FaceBook Page and Back: Dave Hickey’s Digital (Mis)Adventures” with Dr. Friedman, happening on March 31st at 7pm (free event). Dr. Julia Friedman is a Los Angeles based Russian-born art historian, writer, curator and former ASU professor. The lecture will “explore the intersection of art criticism and social media. Dr. Friedman will present her two new publications—Wasted Words: The Essential Dave Hickey Online Compilation and Dust Bunnies: Dave Hickey’s Online Aphorisms—the results of her most recent project based on the digital writings of the MacArthur laureate art critic Dave Hickey”, states the SMoCA Website.
SMoCA museum admission is only $7 for adults, $5 for students, and children under 15 are free. Every Thursday the museum offers complementary admission as well as Friday and Saturday evenings after 5pm. FREE Docent-led museum tours are every Thursday at 1:30 p (no reservations required); and every Sunday at 1:30pm from October through April, FREE with Museum admission.
