SMoCA has a packed schedule this January featuring new exhibitions, multiple events, as well as the Spring Opening Celebration the fun begins this week.

Film + Conversation Series returns to the SMoCA this Thursday, January 21st at 7pm with the premiere of “Troublemakers”. This is an award-winning documentary examining the history of land art during the 1960s and 1970s. Highlighting “a body of renegade artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale in the desolate desert spaces of the American Southwest”, states SMoCA.

Next week enjoy “In Conversation: Betye Saar” which will take place on Thursday, January 28th at 7pm offering an evening with the artist on the opening of her retrospective Still Tickin’. Betye will be discussing her long career, extensive body of work and her creative process. The Spring Opening Celebration will take place next Friday, January 29th from 7-9pm and id s free event for the public. SMoCA will celebrate the new exhibition Betye Saar: Still Tickin’ while giving the public a wonderful opportunity to engage with curators and the artist.

Explore the SMoCA’s current exhibitions on display including Bruce Munro: Ferryman’s Crossing on display through April 24, 2016. This is a captivating installation of compact discs that are lit with pulses of light that create shimmering rows of reflective lite that “evokes sunlight bouncing off the surface of flowing water that Munro uses light to animate environments in ways that activate myriad associations.” This exhibition is apart of the Desert Radiance Series with additional installations by the artist at the Desert Botanical Garden, Lisa Sette Gallery and with Scottsdale Public Art.

There is still time to check out Architecture + Art Chris Fraser, an incredible outdoor sculpture reflecting the desert sun will be on view through January 31st. Oakland-based artist, Chris Fraser brings his experiments in light, shadow and movement to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s fourth iteration of the groundbreaking series, Architecture + Art. Fraser’s installation explores light, shadow and movement in a dynamic room installation inspired by Arizona and out diverse and unique architecture. “Inspired by Arizona’s exquisite sky and the experimental architecture found at Biosphere II, Kitt Peak National Observatory and Arcosanti”, according to SMoCA.

SMoCA museum admission is only $7 for adults, $5 for students, and children under 15 are free. Every Thursday the museum offers complementary admission as well as Friday and Saturday evenings after 5pm. FREE Docent-led museum tours are every Thursday at 1:30 p (no reservations required); and every Sunday at 1:30pm from October through April, FREE with Museum admission.
