It’s time for the “Meet the Artist Party” with James Marshall (Dalek) at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, next Friday, November 7th from 7:00pm until 9:00pm!

Recently Marshall was commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art and SMoCA to create stunning new murals in the Lounge, the retail store, and outdoor courtyard.  SMoCa will host a wonderful party where you will have the opportunity to spend time and chat with the artist  and staff about the new murals and more. This kick-off celebration will feature DJ music, a scavenger hunt and a chance to win a prize basket featuring James Marshall-inspired gift items.  Then be sure to join the artist at the Bell Tower just north of SMOCA on Saturday, November 8th from 10:00am until 2pm for the making of a great new community mural! Visitors are welcome to drop by throughout the day and lend a hand in making this new mural! Also the SMoCA will be open with early hours from 10am-Noon and free admission so visitors may check out the new murals!

Not familiar with James Marshall and his fantastic work, well his artwork merged the worlds of street art, Japanese pop culture and the raw energy of the punk scene. He was formally trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and apprenticed with the influential Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami. Marshall’s early career centered on artwork that merged the worlds of street art and cartoons, leading him to his iconic character “Space Monkey” of a catatonic mouse which reflects his vision of a person. SPA says, “James Marshall is now known for his colorful geometric abstract works, often associated with skateboard and graffiti subcultures”. Over time his work has evolved, highlighting bright and vivid color palettes, complex layering of colors, crisp lines, and busy geometric patterns. Also he has continued to create murals around the world and in area of surf, skate and music gear working with a variety of major companies such as Hurley.
