Meet local artist Marilyn Szabo, a veteran photographer who has been capturing striking imagery fueled by her love of history and photography for over twenty five years.
Her photography explores a variety of diverse subjects including architecture, landscape, and people, creating stunning and intimate works, preferring to work in series. Szabo was traditionally trained in photography, receiving her BA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her artwork has been featured in numerous publications including Black and White, Focus, Sun Magazine and most recently Java Magazine. Her work can be found in many public and private collections throughout the United States, as well as receiving a national literary magazine, awarded by Alligator Juniper in 2010 National Photography Award an the cover. She has extensively exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally while garnering numerous awards and grants.
Since 2003, Szabo has tirelessly worked on a large curatorial project for Alliance Bank, which included extensive research, selection and or photographed over 300 images that are exhibited in Alliance Bank’s 10 locations (and growing) in the state. The results of her work is the beautiful book titled At Work in Arizona: The First 100 Years, which is "a history of the state’s economy from Alliance Bank of Arizona’s “At Work in Arizona” bank wide photographic exhibition", says Szabo. Next up for Szabo is a solo exhibition at work in Arizona the first 100 years, featuring a selection of prints from the book. The artist reception and book signing will be held on Thursday, June 4th 7-9pm. Also she currently has three large black and white large photographs on view in Shade Gallery at the monOrchid in the group invitational Feminism Today on view through March 29th. These photographs are from her Maria Callas series, capturing the pure essence of the opera diva and an intimate look at the artists view of feminism. Her work continues to receive rave reviews throughout the art community.
