While the Phoenix-Metro area is often highly regarded for its endless supply of exceptional golf, slightly southward, the city of Tucson boasts an equally impressive course menu.

With the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains as a back drop, some of the finest tees in the Tucson area have ties to some pretty big name designers.

The Robert Trent Jones, Jr- designed Arizona National Golf Club has played host to locals and visitors since its first foursome back in 1995. The true desert course forces players to trust their abilities against forced carries over intimidating desert vegetation. Located adjacent to the Coronado National Forest, Arizona National’s 6,785 yards are as scenic as they are challenging.

The legendary course architect Arthur Hills made his stamp on the Tucson golf market via the San Ignacio Golf Club, which sits just south of the city in Green Valley. Nestled between the Santa Rita and Tumacacoris mountain ranges, San Ignacio offers players 3,000 feet of altitude coupled with 6,704 yards of risk/reward opportunities and breathtaking views.

The Golf Course at Heritage Highlands is a stellar Arthur Hills-designed championship golf course that be found in Marana’s Dove Mountain community. As a part of a collection of courses quickly putting Dove Mountain on the map, The Golf Course at Heritage Highlands offers guests a journey as unique as the undulating mountains that surround it. A combination of two landscapes, the front nine of the course plays through flat land, while the back nine meanders through desert terrain, lakes and mountain topography.

A look into Tucson golf wouldn’t be complete without considering the course that made the region a big name on the professional circuits. Tucson National has played host to more than 30 PGA Tour events and continues to host the annual University of Arizona Invitational. The Catalina Course’s parkland-style layout was designed by Robert Van Hagge and Bruce Devlin. The Sonoran Course was designed by Arizona resident and PGA Tour player Tom Lehman. Tucson National’s two courses, the Catalina Course and the Sonoran Course, feature Bermuda fairways and greens that play well no matter the time year.
