The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the most-attended PGA TOUR event in the world, regularly drawing more than 500,000 fans to TPC Scottsdale each year. You might recognize the hosts of the tournament, The Thunderbirds, in their blue tunics and silver pendants driving around in golf carts, serving Thunder Dogs at the Life Bird Grill or helping with any odds and ends that might occur during tournament week. While all 55 active members – and most of the 350 Life Birds – of The Thunderbirds volunteer an extraordinary amount of their personal time to tournament activities, the Tournament Chairman has the special honor of bringing it all together. This year, the honor falls on Daniel Mahoney, a private equity and corporate lawyer for Snell & Wilmer.

As Tournament Chairman, Mahoney leads the host Thunderbirds in the planning and execution of every facet of the 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open. From meeting with current and potential sponsors, to recruiting PGA TOUR players to play in the 2016 tournament and brainstorming new fan-friendly venues, Mahoney spends an average of 10 hours per day working on tournament-related activities.

In addition to his volunteer work with the tournament host Thunderbirds, Mahoney operates a law practice concentrated in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, securities, venture capital and private equity and corporate law. Mahoney’s clients operate in a wide variety of industries including biotechnology, software, internet tech, telecommunications, manufacturing and transportation. He has been selected by his peers to Best Lawyers in America® since 2008 and was selected Lawyer of the Year in venture capital law in 2013. Mahoney has also written extensively on venture capital with published works in Bloomberg Corporate Law Journal, Venture Capital Journal, Business Law Today, and Insights Magazine. Currently, Mahoney is co-chair of Snell & Wilmer’s Venture Capital and Private Equity Industry Group.

Before practicing Law, Mahoney graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona with a B.A. in history in 1994 before starting his career as a management and systems design consultant with Accenture. He graduated with honors from the University of Arizona College Of Law in 1999.

Mahoney has been an active Thunderbird since 2010, serving as the House and Grounds Chairman in 2011,

King has been an active Thunderbird since 2007, serving as House and Grounds Assistant, Opening Dinner Chairman, Birds Nest Chairman and last year served as the Assistant Tournament Chairman for the 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament.
