Rover’s Respite

While pet accessories come in every shape under the sun, discerning canines need more than a Frisbee to keep entertained. Though they predominantly specialize in children’s custom play homes, La Petite Maison also constructs luxury doghouses for posh pooches.

“We would be building children’s playhouses for these properties that were some of the most beautiful homes I’d ever seen, and I’d look over and the pets had these little plastic dog homes,” says Michelle Pollak, president of the Lollipop Tree, a luxury children’s design firm that operates in conjunction with La Petite Maison. “It took a few years, but one day we finally decided to do a matching doghouse and the idea just kind of took off from there.”

Celebrity pet owners like Rachel Hunter spare no expense when it comes to pampering their pups. Ranging in price from $6,000 to $35,000, luxury doghouses from La Petite Maison are all handmade by Alan Mowrer, president of La Petite Maison. “We’ve always done these ultraluxurious play homes that are handmade and Alan handcrafts each one and signs them, so it’s more of an artisan piece,” Pollak says.

When it comes to designing a haute hound home, Pollak says the sky is the limit, from replicas of the owner’s abode to fantasy doggy dwellings. “Often, we match the dog—for example, a French chateau for a poodle,” Pollak says. “The last one we did was a Spanish mission complete with an altar and stained glass for a Mexican Chihuahua.”

Although she primarily designs luxury interiors for children, Pollak also strives to incorporate as much green design as possible into La Petite Maison’s doghouses. (She says they are the only builder of green doghouses.) “You have to make sure, just as you would for children, that you are using pet-friendly designs that are nontoxic,” Pollak says. “That is huge for kids and pets because they are closer to
the ground.”
