Here's my obligatory Halloween post. Instead of boring you with the cliche parent post on candy calories, costumes, etc, I'm sharing some fun film stats for horror movie fans.

I admit: I don't like scary movies. I never have, as I simply hate being scared. My husband, on the other hand, has every single Halloween and Freddy Krueger movie on DVR, and admittedly, it drives me nuts.

With that being said, I'm not a Halloween Scrooge. I am having a blast putting together my kids'  costumes and look forward to bringing them trick-or-treating. But mark my word, you will not find me cozying up on the couch watching horror flicks. Just not my style.

However, I am not the majority.

Redbox--a popular movie rental hub--polled about 800 of their customers to track their Halloween viewing habits. And, go figure, many people prefer horror during the month of October.

Check out their findings...

57% of respondents said they like scary movies.

49% of the respondents typically watch a horror movie during the month of October to get in the Halloween spirit, while 55% indicated that they will watch a scary movie this Halloween.

Among those who will watch a scary movie:

92% prefer to watch a scary movie at home rather than at the theater.

73% watch scary movies with the lights off.

52% will not watch a scary movie alone.

50% are spooked by strange noises after watching a scary movie.

31% have turned off a scary movie because they were too frightened.

17% believe The Exorcist is the best scary movie of all time.

22% say that Freddy Krueger is the scary movie villain that frightens them the most.

Younger respondents were more likely to indicate that they like scary movies: 67% of those age 18-44 like scary movies vs. 49% of those age 45-plus.

56% of female respondents like scary movies, while 61% of male respondents like scary movies.

And according to Redbox, if you want to get in the Halloween spirit, the top 5 scary movies of all time are:

1. The Exorcist

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street

3. The Shining

4. Halloween

5. The Silence of the Lambs

Personally, I'm more of a holiday feel good film fan, so expect a follow up post in December on family friendly flicks for the winter season.
