Award-winning coffee shop and health store Modern Grind is innovating beyond the coffee bar. The shop supports local schools by offering internships and career and technical education training for students.

“Our ultimate goal is to make a lasting difference in the community,” Owner Daphnie Kelly said. It’s really important to me to help grow and develop people.”

Outside the classroom, Kelly offers students the opportunity to gain real world experience by interning at Modern Grind and tailoring the experience to each student.

“I try to grow our baristas to help them be more successful. They learn skills and I get to pour into them to help build their resumes beyond barista work,” Kelly said.

While interning at Modern Grind, students are encouraged to learn traditional skills such as customer service and coffee making while expanding their horizons into other aspects of entrepreneurship, such as accounting or marketing.

Modern Grind works closely with Nathaniel Showman, the career and technical education director at the Agua Fria Union High School District

“One of the most impactful experiences that can be had during high school is when a student is able to put the technical skills learned in the classroom into a real-world environment and then receive feedback from an established entrepreneur,” Showman said.

The coffee shop offers in-store and drive-through food and beverages. Those looking to spice up their morning can opt for the surprise latte or try one of Modern Grind’s many specialty coffee drinks. For more information, visit moderngrindcoffee.com.
