“We help lift them up by letting them know they still have self-worth so they stand up on their own two feet by themselves,” says the new President of the Board of Directors of The Crossroads, Inc. -  ROBERT J. NOVAK

ROBERT J. NOVAK, A LEADING MEMBER at Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, has practiced law since 1971 and has had extensive experience in representing clients from all over the country. Now, the married father of one is taking on a new challenge and exciting opportunity after being named the incoming President of the Board of Directors of The Crossroads, Inc.

The Crossroads was established in 1960 as a nonprofit organization that helps provide transitional living and 12-step recovery programs for alcoholic adults in Phoenix. The facilities offer a clean and sober living environment, three-meals-a-day food service and more than 50 weekly meetings, attended by more than 2,500 recovering individuals. (The 51-year-old establishment has seen more than 25,000 people.) Recovering alcoholics must come in sober and find work within the first two weeks of entering the program, helping them gain responsibility and self-confidence. The Crossroads allows the individual time to determine what they want for their future once they have received the tools to empower themselves and achieve success.

Novak has been involved with The Crossroads for several years. Before becoming president, he was a strong advocate in funding and volunteering because he believes “The Crossroads provides a base and support system for those who have hit rock bottom. We help lift them up by letting them know they still have self-worth so they stand up on their own two feet by themselves.” Novak took on the role as president because of the prevalence of alcoholism in many people’s lives. “Everyone knows someone, in some way, shape or form, that has been affected by this disease. I became upset that I knew of so many people and I couldn’t help them. So that’s my mission, to help them recover and prevail.”

During Novak’s term as president he plans to deliver boundless changes, as his predecessors have before him. However, Novak says that “this organization has always been considered a smaller endeavor, [but] it is growing tremendously. It is now too big to be considered ‘small.’ We are going to start transitioning The Crossroads to fit a larger scale community.”
