Bryce Canyon's Geology Festival (Geo Fest) is scheduled for Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13, 2024. Join park rangers for guided hikes, family-friendly geology programs, evening programs as well as exhibits and family oriented activities at the Visitor Center.

Day 1: Friday, July 12, 2024

10 a.m. to 11 a.m. - Hike with a Geologist

12 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Visitor Center Plaza Activities

Geology booths from nearby public lands and parks will be set up at the Visitor Center. Stop by and learn something new!

• Booths include Dixie National Forest, Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Southern Utah University, Snow Canyon State Park, St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site, Utah Geological Survey Utah Tech University, and Zion National Park.

2 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Geology Talks

8:00 p.m. - Evening Program at North Campground Outdoor Theater (Free Ticket May be Required*)

Earth Detectives: How Geologists Study Earth’s History

• Cate Larsen is a geology communicator from New York state known on social media as the Groovy Geologist. Her educational videos, podcasts, and live lessons bring the wonder of geology to a worldwide audience in fun and exciting ways. Offline, she speaks in classrooms and libraries, and has also appeared on television shows such as Prime Suspect Earth. Her talk will focus on how geologists study the rock record to interpret what happened long ago, and how doing so helps us understand the natural processes happening today.

Geologic-Hazard Mapping in Utah's National Parks

• Tyler Knudsen is a Senior Geologist with the Utah Geological Survey’s Geologic Hazards Program in Cedar City, Utah. He holds a B.S. degree in geology from the University of Utah and a M.S. degree in geology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His primary responsibilities include identifying, investigating, and publishing information on hazardous faults, landslides, rockfalls, ground subsidence, and other potential geologic hazards in southwestern Utah. He has authored and co-authored several studies and maps on the geology and geologic hazards of the Cedar City-Parowan area, St. George basin, Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and Bryce Canyon National Park.

*Evening Program Ticket Policy

If weather is good, no tickets will be required for the North Campground Outdoor Theater Evening Program. However, if inclement weather requires the Evening Program to be moved to the Bryce Canyon Lodge, seats will be reserved for ticket holders. *Visit alerts page for updates.
