Description

Valley girls encouraged to ‘be weird’ at Arizona Science Center STEM Sleepover

Spots still available for girls in grades 4-8 for hands-on learning event

PHOENIX, AZ (October 20, 2017) – Cow eye dissections, suturing techniques on fake skin and DNA extractions sounds like Dr. Frankenstein was set loose in Phoenix, but these are just a few of the hands-on learning activities that Valley girls grades four through eight will have the opportunity to take part in at Arizona Science Center’s 5th Annual Girls in STEM Sleepover on October 27th and 28th.

To continually inspire, educate and engage girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), the Girls in STEM sleepover is an event filled with learning opportunities centered around biology and biotechnology. The girls will meet and visit with women in STEM careers, and engage in a variety of hands-on collaborative problem-solving activities throughout the evening and into the next morning.

“There is no better way to get inspired in science than to get your hands dirty and learn just how exciting the sciences can be,” said Chevy Humphrey, the Hazel A. Hare President and CEO of Arizona Science Center. “Having the opportunity to bond over these activities and have a good old-fashioned sleepover makes this a memorable experience for these girls and take what they learned and apply to their continued education in STEM subjects.”

Registration is still open for girls to attend at http://bit.ly/2xUEqUc . The event cost is $30 per girl which includes all activities and food for the overnight event. Scholarships for up to 40 girls are also available and applications can be found at http://bit.ly/2zogjwH.

The event starts at 6 pm on October 27th and will end at 9:30 am on the 28th. Additional activities to include decoding different DNA traits of humans and learning how to run disease diagnostics. The event will culminate with a group challenge activity. The Girls in STEM Sleepover is graciously funded by WebPT, Herbert H. & Barbara C. Dow Foundation, APS, GoDaddy, Macy’s, Microsoft, SRP, AT&T, DigitalWire360, Freeport-McMoRan Foundation, Intel and Central Arizona Project.
