Description

On Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, the Heard Museum will convene one of the largest gatherings of American Indian Hoop Dancers to compete in its 27th-Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Competition. Male and female athletes from across the U.S. and Canada will compete in a rigorous competition for cash prizes and the title of World Champion Hoop Dancer. Each contestant will present unique aspects of their heritage combining dancing strength, creativity, intricate footwork along with contemporary dance influences.

Dancers are judged by their precision, timing/rhythm, showmanship, creativity and speed. Contestants compete in one of five categories during the two-day event: Tiny Tots (5 and under), Youth (6-12), Teen (13-17), Adult (18-39) and Senior (40 and older). This notable competition draws thousands of attendees and showcases the long-standing tradition of an American Indian sport. Prices vary for admission, but fees include day-of museum admission. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and folding chairs for this outdoor event.
