Wedding cakes are not all about the flavor. The design is very important too! For The Special Event 2011 Wedding Lunch that Jennifer and I produced at the end of January, we assigned our cake committee chair, Monica McQueen of Tres Chic Events, to ask five local cake designers to design a cake based on our chosen theme of “In Love With Metallics.” We also asked Kathy Jo Peterson of Raise the Cake to work with the cake designers to create a cake stand that would enhance the amazing cake designs. We chose to display the cake and cake stands on clear acrylic pieces so that the cakes truly were the center of attention. The result was OUTSTANDING!
The first cake was designed by PJ South of La Dolce Pesca. We loved the orange, turquoise and metallic accents on the cake. You can’t see them in this photo, but there were peacock feathers as well. It was beautiful! The next cake was designed by Tammie Coe of Tammie Coe Cakes. Golds, muted green-blues and shimmering beige colors were highlighted in the floral, stripe pattern and dragonfly details. Once again, a true masterpiece!

This next cake was covered in an intricate pattern with gold metallic details on each layer. The cake stand by Raise the Cake really made this cake shine.

The next cake was designed by Barbara Gardner at Let Them Eat Cake. It was so outside of the box! They based it on an alternative couple and called it “Steam-punk.” Silvers, platinums, golds and coppers… it was glimmering with metallics! And the cake stand again from Raise the Cake really enhanced the overall concept even more. The final cake was designed by Ella Levinson of Classic Cakes and Confections. This cake was one for the glitz and glamour girl. It had bows and crystals and lots of bling, yet was so clean and pretty perfect!

All of these pieces were true works of art! So if you are looking for some fabulous cake designers, check out these five companies. The cakes are so great you don’t want to eat them…but you do anyway!
