HomeTucsonTucsonista › Tucsonista: Philip Manus Debuts 2011 Collection

I first met Philip Manus in 2008 when I was asked to model his pieces for a charity fashion show. Before then I would have never guessed that he was the man behind some of the most feminine and sophisticated clothing I have ever seen in Arizona.

At that time Manus had only four years of fashion design under his belt, yet he was creating dresses as if he had been designing his whole life. Philip first took a shine to designing in 2004, when he took classes at The Art Institute Design Center in Tucson. There he studied fashion design, draping and pattern making. His first garment was a woman’s knee length, wool houndstooth jacket with a concealed front zipper and a huge stand up collar. The Jacket was fitted through the waist and flared out from the hip to the knee. “I remember it like it was yesterday, because it took me a week to make,” jokes Manus.

Manus has featured his designs in dozens of local fashion shows, yet he is still striving for something much bigger. This year Philip has expanded his line to include men‘s wear. His classic fitting men’s suits reflect his impeccable fashion taste as well as bring in an air of masculinity. “I want to expand my men’s line into a brand that can outfit an entire man from head to toe”, says Manus.

To achieve this, Philip is also designing a luxury men’s underwear line called, “Manus”. Though these underwear are not your regular cotton boxer briefs, they are both stylish and comfortable. They are made from soft and comfortable Bamboo and Modal.

Phillip will also be introducing “Phillip Manus Scarves” for his 2011 collection, which are made from luxurious silk charmeuse and printed with whimsical designs.

Manus’ always intriguing choice of print and color sparked my curiosity as to his inspiration. He explained to me the explosive process involved in creating these masterpieces. “I start with a design board using themes based on era‘s or events”, says Manus, “then I pick the colors I feel represent the theme. Lastly I will go fabric shopping and find exquisite fabrics that suit the look”. Often times Manus will have his own fabric designs printed so as to completely capture his vision.

Phillip Manus’ 2011 Collection was inspired by the English Countryside. He wanted to incorporate floral prints, bold colours, along with a flirty silhouette. “The collection incorporated a tradition feel, while being fun at the same time”. His men’s collection doesn’t incorporate floral like the women’s line, but Manus did hold true to his English country side by using a sheer plaid that is reminiscent of a country tea party.

Phillip Manus debuted his 2011 Womens and Mens Collection on December 11, 2010 at the Old Market Inn in Tucson.
