The Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO) kicked off its 81st season this month, celebrating a humble beginning that originated in a high school auditorium. The inaugural season consisted of just two concerts, but has since grown to over 70. Here’s a preview of the Orchestra’s upcoming performances.

Pima Air and Space Museum - Moveable Musical Feasts
When: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Pima Air and Space Museum
What: The Moveable Musical Feasts series features some of the TSO’s finest ensembles at unique, cozy settings around the Tucson-area. The series opens with a concert at the Pima Air and Space Museum located at 6000 E Valencia Rd. Music lovers will enjoy the sounds of a Brass quintet and Percussion quartet while taking in the sights of stunning aviation history. Tickets are $100. Strauss, Liszt and Poetry
When: Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29 and 30, 2009 at 8 p.m.
Where: Tucson Music Hall
What: As part of the Classic Series Program, the TSO has been selected to perform the world premiere of Stephen Paulus’ Dylan Thomas Songs, along with Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs. Paulus’ composition is based on three of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ famous works, including the often quoted “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night.” Strauss’ Four Last Songs features the poetry of Hermann Hesse and Joseph von Eichendorff. Elizabeth Futral will charm the audience with her soprano vocals. Ticket prices range from $20 to $72.

Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus presents: Mozart and Schumann
When: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19 and Nov. 20, 2009 at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 at 2 p.m.
Where: Tucson Music Hall
What: The Arizona Boys Chorus celebrates its 70th anniversary, the 200th birthday of German composer Robert Schumann and the 90th birthday of former TSO Music Director Frederic Balazs. George Hanson will conduct Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, nicknamed “Jupiter," Schuman’s Symphony No. 2 and a song from Balazs’ Concerto for Orchestra. Tickets range from $22 to $72.

Art Garfunkel
When: Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Tucson Music Hall
What: Art Garfunkel, one-half of Simon and Garfunkel, will join the TSO to perform some of the duo’s most popular songs. Garfunkel teamed-up with his singing partner Paul Simon in 1957, which led to a successful career as a Grammy-winning, 1960’s music icons, perhaps best-known for their single “Mrs. Robinson.” Tickets range from $32 to $82.
