Tempe-based artist Becky Spradling is set to showcase her latest work in Phoenix as part of the Carmody Foundation's Art for Good Project. This exhibit, hosted at Sisāo Gallery and organized by Artlink, will feature pieces from Spradling and nine others to support local charities.

As a longtime Arizona resident, Spradling finds herself humbled and inspired to be part of an initiative that allows her art to contribute to the community – a mission close to her heart, given her background in behavioral health services. The exhibit began with a reception in November, where Spradling's piece, Golden Agave, is now on display.

Spradling's journey began with an enduring love of art sparked by a simple box of crayons. Originally from Cleveland, she moved to Arizona at 18 and has remained inspired by the Southwest's unique landscape.

Although she initially pursued a career in counseling, Spradling eventually transitioned to art full-time, blending her experiences with people and nature into vivid, emotive works. Her botanical paintings capture Arizona's beauty, often using layers of oil paint to create detail and depth.

"Arizona is filled with unique plants and light that inspires me to paint," Spradling said. "Most often, these pieces are 'portraits' of plants, but I sometimes add backgrounds that include abstract images of the surrounding area."

Spradling strives to capture people in authentic moments in her figurative art, creating scenes that evoke strong emotions.

"I describe my work as representational with an artistic license that might include abstraction and even touches of whimsy," she said.

Drawing on her years as a counselor, Spradling finds endless inspiration in humanity's honest, unguarded aspects. Her figurative pieces often feature blurred, dream-like backgrounds that inspire viewers to decide whether the scene occurs indoors or outdoors.

"In these works, I purposely create confusion in the background, leaving the viewer to wonder," she said.

Securing the Carmody Foundation grant was no small feat. Out of 124 entries, Spradling was one of ten artists chosen. This recognition provides visibility for her art and an opportunity to support causes she cares about.

Carmody Foundation’s Art for Good Project: The Art for Good program was developed in support of the philanthropic initiatives of the Carmody Foundation to expand and improve the quality of life for those who are most underserved and impacted by lack of access and service. The program demonstrates how artists and the private sector can work together to positively impact lives in the community.

"It is an absolute honor to participate in this project," Spradling said. "In my career in behavioral health, I became familiar with the good work of many agencies that the Carmody Foundation supports."

The Art for Good Project exhibit is open at Sisāo Gallery, 1501 Grand Ave. in Phoenix. The event is free, and the public is encouraged to meet the artist and enjoy the works until the exhibit ends on November 30.
