Collector car, motorcycle and military enthusiasts: get revved up for the 7th annual Concours in the Hills on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Fountain Park in Fountain Hills. The free, family-friendly event promises new, exciting elements this year at the high-velocity event with a low-key, beautiful outdoor backdrop that includes food and live music, all benefitting world-class care at Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Concours in the Hills creator, Peter Volny, built a thriving advertising empire around promoting the automobile industry. Migrating to Arizona, a “mecca” for car collectors, he turned his passion for speed and exotic cars into an anticipated event that draws car enthusiasts from across the Southwest. A childhood cancer survivor, Volny donates all proceeds from showing fees to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

To date Concours in the Hills has raised $275,300 for the Hospital’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Cars, Volny says, are like pieces of art you can drive and enjoy. Two popular draws include Jaguar D-types valued at $20 million and $21 million, racecars made in limited number in the 1950s. This year, the one and only Shelby Lone Star Cobra III prototype will showcase its priceless value. While slick Ferraris and muscular Corvettes are always popular stops, a broad variety of cars are welcome.

The show’s high voltage energy doesn’t just come from firing the engines of the cars that arrive from across the Southwest — Nevada, California, New Mexico and Colorado — but also from a military component Volny discovered spectators loved.

In 2016, the Army Heritage Foundation agreed to fly in the military attack helicopter — coincidentally named Cobra — to land right beside the fleet of Cobras. 

The concept was such a hit he contacted the Marine Corps, which flew in their Viper helicopter as well – all the way from San Diego. They’ll return in 2020, with the Viper Car club on board to park nearby, offering fans brawn and beauty in both the vehicles and helicopters. The festivities will launch with a fly pass from the Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum.

Several decorated racecar drivers attend the event to rev up the engines at the start of the show. Lyn St. James, the first woman to be named Rookie of the Year at the Indianapolis 500, will return in 2020. Others include Paul Tracy, Derek Daly, Arie Luyendyk and Didier Theys.

The free event to the community started in 2013 with 220 cars and 5,000 guests, and in 2018 featured 941 cars and some 25,000 guests.

Event admission and parking is FREE to spectators. The exhibitor entry fee is a minimum $60 donation for vehicles, $30 for motorcycles. Additional donations are encouraged.
