What: The “last” Arizona event to publicly view the Andy Warhol outside of the Larsen Gallery
This is a special weeklong public viewing of Alice Cooper’s Little Electric Chair (Red) by Andy Warhol. A unique opportunity for the public to view the work in person before it is sold at Auction on October 23rd at the Larsen Gallery.
Background information:
In 1972, Alice Cooper originally acquired the painting when it was given to him as a birthday present by his girlfriend Cindy Lang. Ms. Lang, a known regular at Andy Warhol's Factory, appeared on the cover of the second issue of Interview magazine in December 1973. Ms. Lang approached Shep Gordon, Cooper's agent still to this day, to borrow $2,500 to acquire the Little Electric Chair.
During this period, Cooper became friendly with Andy Warhol and frequently hung out with him at Max's Kansas City in New York and at Studio 54 in the late 1970s. The painting hung in Cooper's New York apartment, but due to his touring schedule, it was removed and placed in storage.
In 2008, the subject of the Warhol paintings came up again while Cooper was playing golf with Shep Gordon and Dennis Hopper in Maui. Hopper mentioned that he owned several Andy Warhol works worth millions of dollars. After hearing this, Cooper immediately called his mother in Phoenix and asked her to look for the work in the garage where it was rediscovered.”
