In My Shoes loves to feature students from Arizona State University and likes to get their personal style under the radar. Demetrius Burns attends ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and at the age of 21, his style catches the attention of most. For Burns, the Aztec culture inspires his personal style because of the colors and intricate geometries.

Demetrius Burns, Junior, Arizona State University.

Why did you choose Journalism as your major?

“I’d die without writing. I am compelled to write and want to dedicate my whole life to the pursuit.”

What is your dream job?

“My dream job is working at the New Yorker and being a simple poet.”

How does journalism affect your personal style?

“I am a creative writer so with my visual aesthetic I try to mirror my creative energy. That means bright colors, intricate designs and lots of accessories. In this way, I feel like I am visually personifying my kaleidoscope mind.”

Where do you normally shop?

“I usually shop at Urban Outfitters because I love the designs, they are very bright and intricate. Mercantile-friendly and small, and they have a lot of vintage clothes and I am absolutely enamored with vintage.”

Absolute favorite brands?

“My favorite brands are Levis, Polo and anything produced by Urban.”

One piece of clothing your obsessed with right now?

“I’m obsessed with my Obey hat. It’s a kaleidoscope of colors and I wear it all the time.”

Your going to the movies, what does your outfit look like?

“Bright, intricate and warm. I would prefer to have on some nice Levis with a cardigan and a bright scarf, some boat shoes and a beanie.

Aside from his awesome vocabulary, his sense of style certainly stands out in the halls of Cronkite.  With the mixture of patterns, colors and fabric, his style is his own way of expressing himself when he’s not hard at work writing poems or blogging.

“That’s my style. I get intricate with my accessories and simple with the basic stuff.”
