A Taste of J’s Kaiyo Sushi + Bar

When it comes to delicious sushi, our motto is the more the merrier. So we were excited to try the new J’s Kaiyo Sushi + Bar on Miller and Camelback in Scottsdale (found in a renovated Arby’s, no less).
The menu is bursting with sushi options, featuring flown-in-daily ingredients, as well as sharable Mediterranean- and Eastern-influenced dishes, handcrafted cocktails and more from chef Jason McGrath and sushi chef Todd Register. The atmosphere is welcoming, comfortable and laidback, with modern beach décor and lots of calming blue accents–the perfect setting for taking in sushi roll after sushi roll.
To start, the shishito peppers are a great way to wake up the taste buds, complete with Asian-influenced ingredients like lemongrass, ginger, sesame vinaigrette and sesame seeds. Looking for a heartier dish to share? The lamb ribs are satisfying–and picturesque, too. The tandori masala-rubbed ribs have mouthwatering, finger-licking-good flavor and are sided with a refreshing cucumber-shiso yogurt and radish, raisin and cumin salad.

Since a trip to J’s Kaiyo wouldn’t be complete without a few sushi rolls, we recommend Colleen’s Dream roll ($ for each order will be donated to Colleen’s Dream Foundation) with tuna, mango, avocado, fresno chilies, kaiware and jalapeno vinaigrette. The roll doles out a bit of spicy and deliciously fresh, bright flavor. The Kaiyo roll, with blue crab, tempura asparagus, cucumber, big eye tuna, salmon and yellowtail, is pure indulgence, packed with varying textures and flavors so your taste buds never get tired.
J’s Kaiyo is now open for happy hour at 3:30 p.m. (weekdays) and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.
