Raw Food Guide to Phoenix

A friend of a friend was in town from LA and asked me if I knew any local raw food restaurants. I was stumped. I know the rules of raw… no food heated above 115 degrees. I know the reason… cooking zaps life-promoting enzymes and nutrients. And I even know of a few famous raw foodies… Woody Harrelson, Carol Alt. Yet I didn’t know how to steer a rawist in the right direction in my very own city. So, I want to my raw foodie friend Malynda Twitchell, the gal behind Akeso Raw Juice (custom-blended raw organic cold-pressed juice delivered to your door!), for all her raw favorites.

Malynda’s Raw Favorites

Favorite raw food restaurant Chakra 4!! They have the best Zucchini Pasta with “meat balls” and their Nori Nacho Chips are absolutely fabulous!! Every client I take with me to Chakra 4 loves it!!

Favorite raw food dish at non-raw restaurant I’m huge on salads, so anywhere I go, whether the restaurant is raw or not, I know I can always find comfort in a large bowl of leafy greens and an array of colorful veggies. Try True Food Kitchen and Nourish!

Favorite raw cookbook Raw Food/Real World by Matthew Kenney and Sarma Melngailis… this was the very first “uncook” book I got when transitioning to the raw lifestyle. The recipes are fantastic and totally doable for the raw newbie.

Favorite supermarket to buy raw I love Whole Foods for raw snacks and treats that most other stores don’t carry. But in all honesty, as long as the store has a fantastic organic produce section, then I’ll be down for some shopping 🙂

Raw food MUSTS I never do without
*Homemade sprouts (alfalfa, broccoli, mung beans, sunflower)… these can be used to top salads, to add to raw sandwiches and crackers, and they’re excellent for juicing!

*Homemade raw vegan nut milks (almond, Brazil, cashew)… they’re a great dairy milk replacement, a great addition to smoothies, and they taste amazing!

*Frozen fruit is a must for whipping up green smoothies on the go

*Super Foods are a must to keep stocked up on too! My staples: Kale for sure, plus kelp noodles, plenty of raw nori sheets for raw vegan sushi and fresh made organic sprouts!!

*Raw protein powders such as Sun Warrior and Garden of Life Raw Meal. Mix these powders with some super foods and/or superfood powders (My faves: spirulina, Vitamineral Green powder, Healthforce Fruits of the Earth) and you have little shots of goodness ready to go in a shaker cup!

*If you’re new to raw, a few great kitchen appliances are a blender, a dehydrator and a food processor!

*I’m big on Kombucha, therefore I love making my own. Saves money and tastes great!
