Adam Maielua is a health and wellness junkie –and his passion is infectious. No, I’m not saying you’ll stand next to Adam and automatically turn into a fitness model, but his enthusiasm is definitely contagious. Take his reformer class at The Body Lab or his yoga class at CoreBalance or his bootcamp at UltraFit and you’ll see what I mean. Yes, he teaches it all… and skies and scuba dives too! Here, the lead trainer at The Body Lab shares his top healthy holiday strategies, from how to budget calories to shaking that over-commitment guilt…

1.  Break routine. Energy and time can deplete quickly with an extended social schedule. Be ready, or better yet, plan ahead to workout at different times and with different activities. Even if it’s not what we prefer, any movement is better than sitting still.

2.  Budget calories. Eat clean all week and the day before the party so any binging won’t affect the bottom line. For some events it’s better to eat before so we don’t overindulge. At the party, fill up on leaner proteins and fibers if available and there will be less room for dessert.

3.  Drop the guilt. Sometimes it’s just plain rude to refuse cake. Physical health is worthless without mental and emotional fitness, but overdoing anything is detrimental. Leave the party a little early. Every extra minute we can take for ourselves is valuable time.
