Décor

Choose decorations that fit your home. Consistency is very important when decorating for a party; you want to carry out the theme in each room making sure to repeat patterns for strength. “I think lighting is really important in décor,” Doan says. She recommends dimming the lighting and using lots of candle light. Stay away from scented candles as they can overwhelm the atmosphere.

Tricks from the Pros: Doan encourages putting a twist on traditional holiday décor. Holiday-inspired fabric can replace regular tablecloths for a buffet and wrapping vases in wrapping paper then placing flowers or candy canes inside are simple ways to have fun with decorating.

Food & Beverages

The menu should consist of items you can prepare ahead of time to ensure everything is complete before your guests arrive. The time of your party will dictate how much and what types of food you will serve. Walinski finds heavy hors d’oeuvrs to be a great choice for parties. Dinner is also nice depending on the theme of your party. Customizing a cocktail is an easy way to provide a drink that all your guests will enjoy while saving money. Make sure to provide non-alcoholic alternatives, water and tea to name a few, and stay away from soft drinks. Cans may interfere with your holiday décor if left around the house.

Host/Hostess

As a host/hostess, your job is to entertain your guests. Socialize and make sure everyone gets to know each other. “The most important ice breaker is that as a host you need to be able to work your room,” Doan says. Keep the music mellow at the beginning of the party so guests can mingle. As the evening progresses, you can pick up the pace. Also, it is very important to recognize your guests at some point in the evening. Thank them for coming and send each one off with well wishes or a happy holiday.

Tricks from the Pros: Although party favors are not a requirement, if you do decide to include them be sure to make them personal and a representation of you and your family. Doan recommends giving guests mason jars full of your family’s favorite holiday snack with the recipe attached.

Whether you are celebrating a specific holiday or simply providing an evening of fun, planning is essential for a successful party. Keep it simple yet elegant remembering the goal is to provide your guests with comfort. “Giving a party is to honor your friends in a sense. It’s not about you, it’s about the people that you’re inviting,” Walinski says. “Make them feel really honored to come into your home. That you have really taken time to make them feel important.” Using these tips will ensure your next holiday party is a success. Happy planning.
