Arizona Childproofers is a locally family owned and operated company based out of Phoenix that focuses on helping families create a safer environment for babies in their homes and around their pools. The owners, Dustin and Nancy Dastrup, not only encourage parents to be proactive about safety in their home, but they also sponsor several parenting groups where they hold safety classes for free, while also working with women shelters in the valley. Their dedication to childhood safety shines through with their kind actions. Here, Nancy tells AFM more about the work they do to help others around Arizona.

AFM: What does your company primarily focus on?

ND: Our company focuses on child safety in the home, around the pool, and in the car.  Our process involves first knowing what age the child is to see what type of protection they would need around the house. Then we evaluate the home to see how to implement the type of safety care needed. Childproofing your home allows your new explorer to move through their environment with fewer restrictions. The proper placement of good quality safety products not only give parents peace of mind but allows children to move around without worry. The reality of it is that parents can't be by their child's side every minute of every day, and childproofing simply adds that extra layer of protection.

AFM: How does Arizona Childproofers participate in charitable events?

ND: Yearly we donate money and prizes as well as teach classes at the Women of Power Labor of Love Community Baby Shower. It really is a wonderful event and I feel blessed to be a part of it.  This year I taught a class on car seat safety and one on general childproofing.  These moms may never be our clients but I feel good that I have given these families some knowledge and tips on creating a safer environment for their babies. We also work with Maggie’s Place, a shelter for homeless, pregnant, or single moms. They have a program where they bring in speakers once a week to talk about different things.  I talk about car seat safety, pool safety, and of course in-home safety and childproofing.  The stronger purpose we hope to pursue is simply saving babies' lives.

AFM: In what way does your company work directly with parents?

ND: We sponsor several parenting groups by giving money directly to them, as well as teach safety classes. We work with Moms on the Move, a program by Scottsdale Healthcare, in teaching classes to new moms several times a year. The classes we ourselves hold around the valley are free for any parent who is raising a child and wants to come to a class. If we ever do charge for a class, we give out free certificates for the charge of that class and also for a free childproofing in-home consultation as well. If these parenting groups hold their own events, we usually attend and provide additional value by supporting games for the children or providing silent auction gifts for free. We feel that we are a resource for parents.  If a parent calls and has a question, we will walk them through the problem.  It doesn’t matter if they are a client or will ever be a client.  We are here to help keep babies safe.

AFM: What else is unique about your company?

ND: My son, Dustin, is the only Certified Professional Childproofer in the state of Arizona. He was certified by the IAFCS: International Association for Child Safety and has been childproofing over ten years. Not only do we do childproofing in the home, but we also do safety classes in regards to pools. Especially in Arizona, child drownings are unfortunately too common, so Dustin and I work outside for drowning safety.  We also donate many Saturdays helping with free car seat checks with either Scottsdale Fire Department or Safe Kids, a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children. We help organizations to sponsor a free car seat check at their location. It is all about keeping babies and children safe!
