Modified Arts is a contemporary art gallery, showcasing a variety of artwork including sculpture, painting, drawing, mixed media, and installation.
Opened in 1999 by the incomparable Kimber Lanning in the heart of the Roosevelt Row Arts District, she quickly built a reputation as a respected gallery and performance venue. Kimber Lanning is the Director and head Curator of Modified Arts as well as the founder of Local First Arizona. Modified Arts has a small but dedicated staff, lead by Connor Descheemaker who plays dual roles as the gallery assistant and co-curator of the space. Together they produce exciting and thought provoking exhibitions drawing attention throughout the state as well as recently being voted "Best Art Gallery" by The Phoenix New Times and community.
“Showcasing stimulating artwork from national and international artists of all media in an accessible environment in monthly exhibitions, seeking to provide a fresh perspective for both new and established collectors”, states Modified Arts.They have exhibited an incredible range of artists such as Alexandra Bowers, Christine Cassano, Jonathan Howard, Derek Hess Sarah Hurwitz, Larry Kornegay, William LeGoullon, Lara Plecas, Thomas Breeze Marcus, Bill Timmerman and Denise Yaghmourian.
Currently on display is the solo exhibition of William LeGoullon titled (Un)Intended Targets that features a stunning selection of photographs that the artist created over a three-year period. Be sure to join them for the First Friday Reception on February 5th from 6-10pm. They will also host a special Artist Q&A with William LeGoullon on the final day of the exhibition on Saturday, February 13, 12-4pm.
In addition to the art gallery Modified Arts also houses Local First Arizona, a small-business coalition, which provides a public office space for the nonprofit. What is Local First Arizona you ask well it is “a statewide, non-profit organization dedicated to raising public awareness of the economic and cultural benefits provided by locally owned businesses”. Together Local First Arizona and Lanning successfully bring together local business across the valley, engaging and encouraging the community while preserving what makes Phoenix wonderful.
