Are Air Taxis the Future of Airport Travel? United Airlines Bets $1 Billion On It

Airline travelers may soon be channeling The Jetsons in the not too distant future.

United Airlines recently announced a $1 billion-plus investment in Palo Alto-based start-up Archer Aviation, predicting that travelers will be taking its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxis to airports by 2024.

And forget about ever missing a flight again—Up to four passengers can ride in Archer’s piloted eVTOL that can travel up to 60 miles at speeds of up to 150 mph.

The partnership also aims to better the environment to de-carbonize air travel, giving customers a quick, economical and low-carbon way to get to United’s hub airports.

For instance, United estimates passengers making the 13-mile trip from Hollywood to LAX on an Archer eVTOL could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50%.
