What began in 2015 as a small business collecting and selling vintage furniture under the name The Salvage Co. has blossomed into something far more intentional, heartfelt, and enduring. In October 2024, that evolution culminated in the launch of Milagros Rústicos, a family-run business founded by Pat Dickenson, Rich Helmer, and Jodi Helmer, and now located in the Village Square at Dana Park in Mesa.
“Our new name reflects who we are now,” Rich said. “We outgrew our old identity. We’re not salvaging anymore – we’re curating. We’re bringing in pieces that are handmade, beautiful, and full of soul.”
Milagros Rústicos specializes in rustic furniture and décor handcrafted by artisans in Mexico, Peru, Brazil, and the United States. The shop features one-of-a-kind finds: reclaimed wood tables made from 80- to 100-year-old timber from Chihuahua, Mexico, handblown glassware, colorful Talavera pottery, handwoven textiles, and hand-carved furniture that reflects generations of tradition.
“This is the furniture we have in our own homes,” Rich said. “It’s the kind of craftsmanship that holds up for decades—and looks even better with time.”
Each piece at Milagros Rústicos is sourced with purpose from family-owned workshops and skilled artisans. It’s not just about the look; it’s about the legacy. The store has gained a following for its curated atmosphere, where every corner feels like a fully designed space, not just a showroom.
“We want people to walk in and feel inspired. Even in our small space, we try to make it feel like a home,” Rich explained. “We love this style because it’s timeless. Trends come and go, colors change, but this kind of design stays relevant. It tells a story, and people connect with that.”
The family’s deep appreciation for rustic design goes beyond aesthetics. Popular pieces currently include oversized rustic beds, handmade bars, and kitchen islands, all perfect for homeowners leaning into more entertaining and hosting at home. And while the rise of online shopping hasn’t gone unnoticed, Rich says nothing compares to seeing these pieces in person.
“We’ve started selling online, but so much of what we carry is fragile or heavy. Plus, no photo can replace the feeling of touching reclaimed wood or seeing the hand-carved details up close. We always encourage people to come in and experience the craftsmanship for themselves.”
Though Milagros Rústicos no longer offers full home redesign services like Pat and Jodi once did, the team still enjoys helping customers find the perfect pieces to transform their spaces. That passion recently extended to commercial projects as well, including a collaboration with The Graduate Hotel in Palo Alto, California, which now features custom bar and counter stools from the Mesa-based shop.
For Rich, the most rewarding part of the business is hearing from happy customers: “The best moment is when someone sends us a photo of their new piece in their home. That’s why we do this. We want to help make homes more beautiful, meaningful, and filled with pieces that last.”
Milagros Rústicos may have a new name and a new home, but its heart remains the same: family-owned, built on integrity, and driven by a passion for quality, heritage, and beauty. Whether you’re redecorating your entire home or just looking for one unforgettable piece, Milagros Rústicos offers something truly special. Learn more by visiting milagrosrusticos.com.
