Is Neurofeedback Therapy Right for You?

By Dr Ryan House PsyD

Neurofeedback is a therapeutic intervention and technology that can help your brain waves work together in a more balanced way. Neurofeedback helps patients to improve their neuroregulation and stability and modify brain patterns that may have implications in mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADD/ADHD, and Traumatic Brain Injury. It is a non-invasive method that has little to no side effects.

During neurofeedback, session sensors are placed on your scalp, typically the forehead. You will feel little to no discomfort during the session. These sensors measure electrical activity in the brain and generate an Electroencephalogram or EEG. Your brain will then interact with a computer and software and based on your brain activity; the signal is sent back to the brain that causes a change in your dominant brainwaves. This disrupts the brain that is “stuck” in certain ways of functioning and allows the brain to reorganize at more optimal ways of functioning. Like when you reboot your frozen computer neurofeedback can help get you out of stuck, unhealthy brain patterns.

Each neurofeedback session lasts about 30 minutes. Treatment usually takes 15-20 sessions; however, many patients feel improvements from the very first session.

Neurofeedback has been shown to be efficacious in the treatment of certain psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, panic, insomnia, and ADHD/ADD. Additionally, Neurofeedback can improve your cognitive performance and enhance attention, memory, and learning.
