I first saw Jessie Hilgenberg at a power-packed class at Amenzone Biltmore. I didn’t know her, but she was the epitome of Hot Body Secrets – that person you see at the gym and think, Wow, what the heck does she do to stay looking so fab and fit? So at the end of our sweat session, I asked her. Here, the 32-year-old IFBB Figure Pro, Competition Coach, STRONG Bootcamp Director, cover gal and new transplant to Arizona reveals all her diet and fitness secrets…

How to find a workout you love… I love my workouts by making sure I keep variety in them. I’m a person who gets bored very easily, so I’m constantly switching things up and trying new things! My first love will always be lifting heavy weight (it’s what sculpted my physique), but you can always find me at a yoga studio, on the track, on the trails or experimenting with different exercises, sets and reps.

How to eat healthy… For me, eating healthy just means consistency. Five years ago I made a choice to compete in a figure competition and my healthy eating journey began there. There have been bumps in the road while finding out what works best for me, but now it has become a lifestyle. I can’t even imagine not cooking protein in bulk for the week or having my staple health foods in my kitchen (Greek yogurt, almond milk, chicken, Ezekiel Bread & eggs).

How to avoid overeating… The easiest way to avoid overeating is to make sure you are giving your body what it needs! I don’t overeat if I’m well fed. Those two don’t even go together. I eat 4-5 balanced meals every day and if I feel like a splurge, I have one. When you have consistency, a splurge is just that – a splurge. And, well deserved!

How to tame trouble spots… By lifting weights. Your body will look worse if you think restricting calories and doing a lot of cardio will help you. I promise, you will look in the mirror after that and think, “what happened?” Lifting weights and eating clean will do WONDERS for your body and will force trouble spots to get out and stay out.

How to stay motivated… I find motivation in the girls I coach for fitness competitions! I give them the tools, keep them focused, support them to the moon and cheer them on. I have the luxury of working from home – I get to walk to my kitchen and prepare every meal and sneak out to the gym when it works for me. These ladies have children, families, full-time jobs, life challenges and obstacles to overcome that I could never imagine trying to manage while preparing for a competition. They make me so proud. Again, if they’re at the gym regardless of impossible circumstances… I certainly feel motivated to do the same!
