Picture Perfect

Courtney Parks for Ashley Gain

A picture is worth a thousand words; those mere moments when the father of the bride, eyes shimmering, hugs his little girl before walking down the aisle or the look of sheer amazement in the groom’s smile when he sees his bride for the first time. It’s in these moments that love is undeniable and one photo can capture so much beauty.

Each wedding photographer has his or her own unique style; the goal is to find a photographer who can share your vision and deliver images that not only capture all the key moments but tell the story of your wedding day.

To get you started, I’ve written out a few suggestions to keep in mind when you begin the search for your perfect wedding photographer!

1. Know what you want::

There are all sorts of different photography styles; take into consideration what type of wedding photos you want. If you want photos that are candid and spontaneous, capturing all those little moments, then a documentary style is for you! If you prefer more traditional photos, similar to the ones you may find in a your parent’s wedding album, then your looking for a portrait photographer. To each their own; you just have to decide what style best suites you!

2. Do your homework::

Research photographers in your area by checking out their websites, browsing their albums and if your really curious; read reviews from previous clients.

3. Bond with your Photographer::

Do you and your photographer share the same excitement for your vision? It’s crucial for you and your photographer to bond and have a mutually respectful relationship. Your wedding is your day and you have every right to know what you want but don’t forget to be accepting of your photographer’s suggestions, this is their profession.

4. Be Specific::

When you are working with your photographer, be specific about what moments you want captured. There a lot of moving parts going on during a wedding, so make sure you specify what you want in a ‘first look’ shot’ or if you desire a specific composition – how the shot was framed.

5. Know your price:

Your captured moments don’t come cheap but worth every penny; photo packages can range in prices, it just depends on what you want.  When meeting your prospective photographers ask what their ‘shooting fee’ is and standard packaging prices to give you a better price point. Make a point to ask what is included in packages, such as engagement pictures or how much coverage is included on the day of the wedding– just a tip, its usually better to pay for extra coverage and have your photographer present for the entire time. Don’t want to miss a precious moment!
