Founded in 1996 by Dr. Lori Maldonado, Teach One to Lead One® (T1L1) has made its mark by wholeheartedly committing to instilling Universal Principles in students through trained and certified groups of mentors. This commitment revolves around equipping young individuals with the tools to build character and leadership skills that enable them to discover their unique purpose and unlock their boundless potential. T1L1’s Hope Mentors empower young individuals to navigate life's challenges with ethical decision-making, and resilience during school hours. T1L1 aims to cultivate a generation of ethical leaders who contribute positively to society, and inspire others to do the same.

Real Stories of Transformation: Ben’s Journey

Amidst the countless stories of transformation that T1L1 has witnessed is Ben’s journey. Ben’s life took an unexpected turn when he lost both his parents suddenly. At just 17 years old, he found himself homeless, struggling to survive on the streets. Despite his dire circumstances, Ben’s resilience and resourcefulness shone through. He started his own designer resale business, utilizing the power of Ebay on a computer at the public library to sell items he found. He also worked at Panera and would take an Uber to and from work. Through sheer determination, he managed to feed himself through his two jobs while navigating the challenges of homelessness.

When his sister reached the age of 21, she sought guardianship, secured an apartment, and welcomed Ben into her home. Going into his sophomore year, Ben found himself lagging two years behind in his schooling. Ben’s teachers rallied together, devising strategies that encompassed online studies, summer courses, and alternative pathways to guide him through his high school curriculum towards his graduation requirements. He was also able to gain confidence and affirmation from his T1L1 Hope Mentors during the fall semester during his study skills class. 

Ben’s story is a testament to the virtues that T1L1 instills in its students. Despite the adversity he faced, he exhibited qualities of Respect, Integrity, and Enthusiasm. His ability to dream big while facing adversity, exemplifies the transformative power of character development. T1L1's influence extended beyond the classroom, guiding Ben towards academic success and a brighter future.
