Description

On January 30-31, 2021, the Superior Chamber of Commerce will present the 13th Annual Home & Building Tour. This one-of-a-kind event, which will run from 9am to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 5pm Sunday, beginning at the Chamber of Commerce office, will showcase several restored homes and buildings that capture the spirit of Superior, a charming, former mining town with a past dating back to the late 1800s. In addition, the Tour will feature an antique show, handmade pottery for sale from the Mexican village of Mata Ortiz, and performances that will bring the town’s history to life.

As part of an initiative to “Rebuild Superior”, the town is currently undergoing an amazing resurgence that includes giving old buildings new life. Tour attendees will have the opportunity to explore some of these buildings, including a beautifully restored building that belonged to the Knights of Columbus and sat in a state of decay for many decades.

Back by popular demand is the 100-year-old brick high school.  This may be the last chance to see it in its original condition as the town is hoping to purchase it and remodel parts of it to be a multi-generational center for the community.

The Tour’s annual antique show will take place at the Magma Club, a 100+ year old community center that once hosted dinners, dancing, and boxing matches for Magma Mine workers. Attendees can browse the selection of quality antiques or relax and listen to live music on the veranda.

In addition to these fascinating buildings, the Tour will feature dynamic stories about Superior’s history. For instance, Wyatt Earp — an acclaimed performer and relative of the legendary Wyatt Earp — will present a short play called “Doc Holliday, the story Hollywood never told.” Mattie Earp, the common law wife of the elder Wyatt, is buried in Superior. Author and historian, Jack San Felice will present the history of the Silver King mine.

Art lovers will enjoy browsing and taking home their own piece of exquisite, handcrafted pottery from Mata Ortiz, showcased by the artists themselves. Weather permitting, pieces will be fired in an open flame to demonstrate how the pottery is made.

The Annual Home & Building Tour offers a chance to explore Superior’s rich past while seeing how its vibrant future is taking shape. Visitors can also enjoy the town’s selection of shops, art galleries, restaurants, and outdoor activities in the area. Tickets for both days are available for only $14 prepaid and $16 at the door.
