Description

The annual Head for the Cure 5K Run/Walk - Phoenix returns this fall on Saturday, October 30 at 9am at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. The Phoenix 5K is one of 30+ throughout the US to raise awareness and funds for the brain tumor community.

Participants can sign up the day-of or register in advance at www.headforthecure.org/phoenix.

This family-friendly 5K will feature fun Halloween and fall-themed activities, including a costume contest. Those who register will receive an event t-shirt and finisher medal.

This local event will raise funds for the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Nationally, Head for the Cure supports the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC), a unique network of 33 medical centers (led by the National Institutes of Health) with the expertise and desire to participate in state-of-the-art clinical trials investigating new treatments for malignant brain tumors.

More than any other cancer, brain tumors can have lasting and life-altering physical, cognitive, and psychological impacts on a patient’s life. More than 120 different types of tumors exist, but only five FDA-approved drugs and one approved device are available to treat all brain tumors. The average survival rate of a glioblastoma patient (most deadly type of tumor) is 14-16 months.

The Head for the Cure Foundation (HFTC) has raised more than $17 million for brain cancer research since 2003 when the first HFTC 5K was organized in suburban Kansas City. In spite of the many challenges in 2020, primarily the result of the pandemic, the Foundation raised nearly $2.2 million.
