Free Event Presents Education on Early Intervention for Psychosis

The Institute for Mental Health Research and IMHR Epicenter brings its first Early Detection for Psychosis Symposium to Phoenix, with a free event on Thursday, February 8, 2018.

“Psychosis is not a disease that discriminates, and early intervention can make all the difference,” says Dr. Nicholas Breitborde, Director of IMHR Epicenter. “We want to present educational and realistic information as well as support and advice for the caretakers and loved ones of people experiencing first-episode psychosis.”

The symposium, held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Arizona Biltmore hotel, located at 2400 E. Missouri Avenue in Phoenix, is designed to offer education and support to behavioral health professionals, social workers, school counselors, staff and administrators, therapists, counselors, members of the clergy, youth program leaders, parents and anyone that cares for a person living with a serious mental health condition.

The symposium is set to feature speakers and presentations to help attendees learn about and understand early indicators of psychosis in young adults, the importance of early intervention for young adults, current research investigating the neurobiological and genetic causes of this disorder, how to identify clinical risk syndrome for psychosis and more.

Keynote speaker Cheryl Corcoran, MD, MS, Associated Professor and Program Leader in Psychosis Risk in the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, will lead the “Can Schizophrenia Be Prevented?” seminar, followed by the presentation on “Coordinated Specialty Care and Beyond for Individuals with First-Episode Psychosis” by Nicholas Breitborde, Ph.D., Associate Professor - Clinical at the Early Psychosis Intervention Center (Epicenter) in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health and Psychology at Ohio State University. Amelia Gallitano, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, and Associate Professor, Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix will then give her presentation on “A Translational Approach to Develop a Novel, Biologically-Based, Diagnostic Test for Schizophrenia.” Lunch, panel discussions, and a question and answer program will follow.
