Charles Lloyd and the Marvels is a new group that pairs Lloyd with the great Bill Frisell, another legendary collaborator who was named by the New York Times as “one of the most distinctive and original improvising guitarists of our time.” The Marvels’ 2016 Blue Note Records album, I Long to See You, featured elegant takes on American hymns, folk anthems, and protest songs. National Public Radio called their collaboration “music that evokes an uncommon state of grace.”

About Charles Lloyd

Saxophonist Charles Lloyd is a forward-thinking musician's musician whose supreme improvisational talents and interest in cross-pollinating jazz with rock as well as non-Western styles of music during the '60s and '70s established him as one of the key figures in the development of fusion and world music. From the moment he first came to prominence as the young music director of the Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1960, Lloyd began to take audiences on journeys that traversed enormous distances. Over nearly four decades, his compositions have punctuated the post-bop period, embraced the traditional music of a host of world cultures and ciphered the psychedelic 1960s with avant-garde improvisation. Lloyd was one of the first jazz artists to sell a million copies of a recording (Forest Flower) and then he surprised us by walking away from performing just at the point that he was dubbed a jazz superstar. Actually he was just following a trajectory that was taking him closer to the essence of the music he was hearing. To learn more about Charles Lloyd please visit his website charleslloyd.com.
