Inspired by the profound natural beauty of their home on remote Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, Kodo explores the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko. For three decades, the ensemble has forged new directions, striving to preserve and re-interpret the rhythms of this ancient instrument, whose primal sound is said to resemble a mother’s heartbeat as felt in the womb. Kodo’s exhilarating, virtuoso performances feature thundering drums, vocals and dance. Its hallmark giant drum, the nearly 900-pound O-daiko, is a challenging, show-stopping instrument that demands both strength and tenderness to play.
