Hair Trend- Cinnamon Buns

I know I may be influenced a bit by the Cher biography I caught yesterday while I was cleaning but, are we really back to t he seventies or am I having t he most lovely dream? That classic cinnamon bun seventies hairstyle seems to be resurfacing again and again. Not the Princess Leia variety but rather the top of the head swirled bun that a myriad of celebs have been rocking lately. It so reminds me of the ladies that used to attend my Mom and Dad’s summer parties back in the day, complete with what we now call maxi-dresses and uber dark tans. Back then they were usually made of chiffon or a polyester jersey fabric in bright colors or patterns. I remember one of the wives of my Dad’s friends…Genevieve, her hair was as jet black as could be, piled on her head in a perfectly coiffed bun (I suspect it may have been a clip-on) with strategic tight curls around the face. This look of course would not be compete without a super dark Ban de Soleil tan, pale pink lips, white-blue shadow and long false lashes. Lordy how I miss the seventies!

More recently JLo has been spotted sporting the cinnamon bun on the red carpet, this is of course a taller, bolder version reminiscent of looks she sported a few years ago back in the “Beniffer” days. Though I love the look, it can go terribly wrong if worn too tight, or too square.

If you have long one-length hair or hair with minimal, long layers this is a great do for a summer’s evening. Start with a pony tail, then wrap the pony around the middle of your hand, twist and secure with bobby pins around the bun. To emulate the JLo nest, tease for volume first then wrap and twist into a bun.

Or you can try the braided version that Whitney Port sported earlier this month, this can look great with a few pieces of hair in front of the face as shown on WP. But miss Port also sported a very tight version that wasn’t quite as flattering just two days ago. The tighter less face friendly style is one that you should attempt with caution, it may be great for an instant face lift, but not exactly ideal if you have a wide or long face shape.

If your hair is perhaps a bit too short or thin to attempt this do’, go the January Jones route of adding a fake braided pony, just be sure the color matches up well. Test it using a flash camera because different lighting will affect the color or texture of synthetic hair.
